Karens' concrete roots run deep - three generations deep to be exact. Her grandfather started his concrete business in 1943. From there, the industry and company evolved with the creativeness of decorative concrete. Karen's endeavored to learn as much as she could from her innovative father, Calvin Van Heukelem, who ingrained the passion for the artistic side of this industry in her.
Karen has found her own own niche in the industry - exploring the creative side of building and designing with concrete. She has an innate ability to help owners, architects and landscape architects design decorative concrete palettes, as well as design artificial rock structures to enhance space and its community.
Karen truly believes that concrete is a medium that can bridge the gaps in design and should be an element that harmonizes with its surroundings.
Being a regular author for industry publications, Karen regularly writes articles for Concrete Decor. She is known nationally as an expert in decorative concrete business development, social networking and marketing.
As a certified LEED AP consultant, with a BA in Business Administration from Trinity Christian College, and a masters degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Denver it is no doubt that Karen is a master of her craft.
Vice-President, Installation Expert and Polishing Guru
Ryan too has had family ties to concrete since he was a young boy.
He was eager to get involved in the family business at 14, during which time he learned all elements to the concreting industry, in particular, decorative concreting. He has operated as company president for the last 11 years.
Ryan saw a gap in the market and bought decorative concrete to Franklin County, MO. He has operated all areas of the business from sales and marketing, to administration and finance. He is no stranger to hard work and long days and has a 'can-do' attitude to all tasks no matter the size.
Ryan is a member of the board of Directors of the Decorative Concrete Council of ASCC and the Concrete Polishing Council of ASCC and a voting member of ACI Committee 310-J on Polished Concrete.
Ryan's expertise will drive The Art of Concrete's production to ensure quality decorative concrete installations are performed on every job.
Ryan & Karen met through working in the industry and on projects through the Decorative Concrete Council together. They collectively saw a gap in the market and from this realization The Art of Concrete LLC was born.
