Butterfield Crossing Park

The Art of Concrete worked with the Town of Castle Rock and ACC to help create a one-of-a-kind park. The renovation of Butterfield Crossing Park, designed by Design Concepts, created a new park to help address the many needs of the children in the community.

INNOVATION

The design team and town had great visions for this park and really pushed the envelop with the possibilities of decorative concrete. One such element is the sensory wall. This wall is unique in many ways. It introduces both visual and tactile sensory elements. With different concrete finishes and textures, along with various colors, the wall stands out as a unique element. On one side of the wall, there are a few different finishes and many different colors. It includes a finger maze, a mosaic, and other sensory elements. On the back side, the team came up with a design to have the whole sign language alphabet along with some common words sandblasted and stained on the back. This will help bridge some play gaps with children. If that wasn’t complicated enough, the entire wall is in a slight radius with a rolling top and unique skate stops.

sustainability

In addition to the decorative sensory wall, the design team incorporated decorative sandblasting throughout the park. This utilizes both new and existing concrete to create a playful environment without introducing more materials into the project.

REsults

By using The Art of Concrete’s team for the unique elements, such as the radius seat/planter walls, sensory wall, and decorative sandblasting, the project was able to highlight specific areas with decorative finishes and carrying through the playfulness throughout the entire renovation. The park is now open to all and thriving.
