Safety Moment Monday - Windshields

Last week I was reminded of the importance of a clean windshield. I had a rental car and it was a rainy night when I had to pick up my daughter, and the wipers were absolutely awful! Not only is it nerve wracking, it’s scary and dangerous. I mentioned it to the team here in the office, and Steve mentioned that’d be a good safety reminder - including making sure we all have enough washer fluid. So here it is:

For both your personal or work vehicles, please make sure you have good wipers and plenty of washer fluid!

And don’t worry, before I hopped back into the vehicle to drive through our slush streets, I did replace the wiper blade and had plenty of washer fluid - what a huge difference something so simple can make.

Safety Moment Monday - Stretching

Happy Monday. everyone! Today’s safety moment is about the importance of stretching - which will become even more important as we get into colder seasons. We all know the importance of stretching. Every athlete stretches before a big game or race - and each of you is an athlete within our trade. Please take time every day before starting work to stretch and warm up your muscles. This website reitterates the importance and why we should stretch as well as provides a good routine: https://www.bigrentz.com/blog/stretches-for-construction-workers

Safety Moment Monday! Buddy System

At the risk of sounding like my kids’ teachers… today’s safety moment is to recognize the importance of having a buddy system. For the safety of everyone, it is important to never do a job alone. Always be sure to have someone working with you and/or knowing where you are.

Under OSHA Standard 29-CFR 1910.120(a)(3), a buddy system is a means of pairing a group of employees together to ensure that every worker is being observed by another employee in order to provide an endangered employee with immediate assistance.

Please never work alone! If someone calls in sick or doesn’t show up, instead of working alone, please call your supervisor and inform them of the situation. Your safety is more important than getting the job done.

Safety Moment Monday! Helmets!

Happy Monday team! Today’s post is about our switch from the traditional hardhat to the helmet.

Part of a group I am involved with put together a Hard Hats to Helmets website, in it offers a lot of resources and a great explaination as to why helmets offer more protection, and why we are switching:

Why change from hard hats to helmets?

Helmets offer superior protection for construction workers. Traumatic Brain Injuries are responsible for 25% of all construction fatalities, and many life altering injuries. These safety helmets are inspired by the best features of hard hats for construction and head protection for sports such as rock climbing and cycling. They incorporate energy-absorbing liners, and other technologies to ensure the head is better protected from impact. These helmets can help the construction industry reduce these fatalities and injuries.”
